Whither TV Coverage
It is a welcome change that Ghana’s Premier League is henceforth going to receive live free on air TV coverage thanks to the collaborative effort of the Ghana Football Association and Metro TV. The first coverage was the Liberty Professional - Sporting Mirren match at Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra on the first day of the second round of the league.
I was thinking the organizers would be selective enough to screen exciting fixtures normally called match of the day. The Liberty – Mirren match was definitely low key, no wonder we had an empty stadium as if fans had been told the match would be played behind closed doors. The only visible people apart from the players in action were the coaches and the first aid attendants.
The Accra Hearts v Kpandu Heart of Lions fixture at Ho or the Kotoko v All Blacks encounter at Swedru would have been ideal as a curtain raiser for the new TV deal. Hearts are currently the run- away leaders and the spotlight is naturally on which side to stop them so they always make news. Ditto defending champions Asante Kotoko, the team acclaimed to be the one beat to win the Cup so they command massive attention.
Luckily, Hearts will be in action in Accra this weekend likewise Kotoko who will be at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and we could have either of these matches to show the world that our league enjoys some respectable crowd appeal not the kind of barren stadium we saw last Sunday.
It is not being suggested that only matches involving Kotoko and Hearts should be screened. The net should be spread wide but we can still look for quality matches.
The encouraging news from all the league centres talked of quite an appreciable patronage in the opening matches of the second round and it is hoped as the competition gathers momentum interest would soar higher and higher. The reports say match officiating was a bit questionable at certain centres.
My information is that Kotoko fans were not enthused with Referee Mohammed Awal’s decision to award two penalty kicks against their club. “The first one was really bad and it dampened the enthusiasm of the boys .The referee made a big mistake and perhaps it was to atone for his errors that he also gave Kotoko a penalty”, said Jerome Otchere , chief reporter of Kotoko Express newspaper.
Hearts with their brilliant 1-0 away win have taken an almost unassailable lead and it would be a miracle if they fail to win the cup.
