This Man Can Walk The Talk
In my home country Ghana, our traditional chiefs have the customary right to adopt all sorts of high sounding appellations. You may regard some of them as a little bit pompous but don’t forget that the chieftaincy institution is sacrosanct.
Of the many titles the one that tickles me is “Oseadeeyo”, loosely translated meaning one who walks the talk. Incidentally that is the title of my Paramount Chief from the Akuapem Mountains.
On behalf of the numerous supporters of Manchester United in Ghana, I would like to confer on Sir Alex Ferguson the title of Oseadeeyo.
His confident pledge to use United’s disgraceful exit from the European Champions league as a motivation for future success has actually come to pass barely 72 hours after his bold pronouncement.
The 4-1 caging of the Wolves has been described by top football analysts as a wonderful display brimming with positive intent and attacking verve.
May be I would have to revise my notes and give the veteran football manager a little more time to accomplish his mission of leaving United better than he met it a quarter of a century ago.
At this stage, I would like show my appreciation to the United fans who filled Old Trafford to capacity a few days after the Champions league fiasco.
They really possess the right calibre of courage to follow United. I wish I could say the same thing about my favourite Ghanaian club Asante Kotoko supporters who are extremely selective in their patronage of matches. They flock to the stadium only when the going appears good.
Could you believe that following Kotoko’s first Premier league defeat in the season at Bekwai, very few of the supporters had the courage to turn up for the next home match against Cape Coast Mysterious Dwarfs.
And there were enough ingredients to make the match a thriller. Dwarfs were the only unbeaten side and a win would ensure Kotoko’s top spot on the table. As it turned out, the fans missed classic show by their idol club when Daniel Adjei’s sitter won the day for the Porcupines.
And when the supporters, true to character had geared to watch the next match against defending champions, Berekum Chelsea the fixture had to be postponed to enable Kotoko honour a special Independence anniversary match in Tanzania on Sunday.
Luckily, Kotoko maintained their fine from in Tanzania and beat the local idol Simba Club 1-0, thanks to a magical goal by midfielder Daniel Adjei who is fast gaining fame as “scorer of important goals”.
On the back of these two great victories, the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi is expected to be filled to capacity on Wednesday as Kotoko strive to keep the top spot very much aware that traditional rivals, Hearts, are close on their heels with the same number of points but inferior goal difference.
The match may not conjure the same tension like a Kotoko- Hearts super clash but Berekum Chelsea have proved stubborn to Kotoko in the past two years and the mood in the Kotoko camp is to put the “wannabe” current league champions in their proper place.
It is quite and attractive fixture by all standards and it is hoped all fans and the match officials will be sporting enough to contribute to the smooth running of Ghana’s premier league that is fast gaining international attention.
Cheers everybody and keep loving sports.
