The Amazing Ryan Giggs
I doff my hat for veteran Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs for his wonderful engineering of the three marvellous goals that have ousted Chelsea from the medal zone of the UEFA Champions league.
If Giggs’ slide rule pass to Wayne Rooney that won the day for United in the first leg at Stamford Bridge was superb, the two he gave to Javier Hernandez and Park Ji-Sung that won the day for United in the second leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday night were straight from the text book, especially the match-winner to Park that dashed any hopes of recovery by Chelsea who had got a moral boosting equalizer barely a minute earlier.
Giggs has with his incredibly consistent form in two decades really demonstrated that he deserves to be voted Manchester United's greatest ever player by the club's supporters.
The amazing winger has really lived by example with his impeccable demeanour both on and off the field and Alex Ferguson's crop of teenagers are really lucky to have such a role model in their midst.
United’s general performance this season has given me the gut feeling they could hit the 1999 treble once more. The Premiership is for them to lose, and I don't fancy close neighbours City, to be a stumbling block on their way to another FA Cup triumph. With of without their talisman Tevez, City will definitely find United a tough nut to crack on Saturday in the FA Cup semis.
The Champions league final at Wembley could see a replay of the final three seasons ago between United and Barcelona. I base my prediction on the belief that United could dismiss the threat of Schalke in the semis and Barcelona could confirm their superiority over Real Madrid in the semis.
Real Madrid with their massive 4-0 win over Spurs have one leg in the semis already so are Schalke whose 5-2 away victory over defending champions Inter Milan seems insurmountable.
This is quite a thrilling time when the football season worldwide has reached the home stretch (to borrow a horse racing jargon). The races for the Championship diadem is quite close both at home at club and at continental level.
Even in my home country Ghana where there is a general feeling that standards have fallen, there is a hot battle to get a top four spot and the fight for survival at the bottom is also hot.
Chelsea of England may perhaps take consolation in the fact that even though any silverware may elude them this season, their name sake in Ghana, Berekum Chelsea are winning the league hands down.
With only seven matches to go, the Brong Ahafo based club have shot a gap of 13 points between their closest challengers Kumasi Asante Kotoko and only a miracle will find them failing to win the league title.
This will be Berekum Chelsea’s first league triumph and the club will significantly follow the feat of the first club from Brong Ahafo to win the league, Aduana Stars from Dormaa Ahenkro.
May be it would be a good idea if they organise a tour of England after the league and present the Championship trophy to the original Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This should provide a lot of fun.
I am sure by this gesture Michael Essien would be delighted and perhaps be inspired enough to resume playing for the national team, Black Stars. As the football people say, it is all part of the game.
Cheers everybody and keep loving sports.
