Predictions And All That
Kumasi Asante Kotoko, 21 time league champions of Ghana , have actually lived up to predictions by halting their recent chain of defeats on the last day the first round of the league.
The 2-1 win over Wa All Stars at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi was what the necromancers in football had predicted.
Happily, the general feeling among the best supported football club in Ghana is that the team is on the way to a brilliant revival in the second round of the league fixed for Jan 9 2011.Ghana football is the better for it in terms of crowd appeal.
The outcome of football events of any kind are not easy to predict so when Kotoko’s victory came to pass prior to Asamoah Gyan's highly expected BBC African player of the year award, the soothsayers made a third attempt to pick him for the CAF award. But some of us, still recovering from England's shock exit from the 2018 World Cup bid, were not too sure.
The fact is, unlike the BBC which did not need to have any invested interest in whoever won their award; the same cannot be honestly said about the CAF headed by the veteran Cameroonian football guru Issa Yahatou who is also FIFA executive member.
All the signals pointed to a straight fight between Samuel E'too of Cameroun and Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan. And going by CAF's record in this annual award it looked highly improbable that Ghana FA Chairman Kwesi Nyantakyi, honoured for his outstanding administrative acumen, and the double honours achieved by the Black Stars and coach Milovan.
Ghana would be allowed to sweep the awards by giving Asamoah Gyan the CAF crown. He had to be content with the less glamorous promising player tag.
Enter Samuel E’too who had been greatly helped by the timing of the event. The aggressive striker had made a wonderful contribution to Inter Milan's Club World Cup triumph over Mazembe of Congo.
Infact, he was selected player of the tournament in Abu Dhabi and this was fresh in everybody mind.
Some of us Africans still hold the tenet that blood is thicker than water; and so as long as E’too continues to maintain his form and Hayatou still heads CAF, it won’t be easy for this coveted prize to elude E’too.
On a lighter side, I admired the way GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi walked so majestically to receive his award. You could sense he would have loved it if he had the size of Hayatou.
I am just wondering what the reaction of those who the other day ransacked Kwesi’s office would be if they had been among the packed audience at the CAF awards night in Cairo to see the pint- sized Kwesi taking those giant strides on the podium.
I am also wondering when the weather will be kind to English football so my favourite team , Manchester United will continue their brilliant assault on the Premiership title. Nature is wonderful indeed.
Can you imagine that while I am sitting bare-chested in front of my computer, some people are freezing elsewhere even with heaters on.
Cheers everybody and keep loving sports.
