What A Football Season

It’s unfortunate that the league season in my country, Ghana, could not end simultaneously with that of England as planned. I was so excited that for once our local league was going to end as originally programmed but once again something cropped up and a special match in memory of the 127 football fans who were killed in a stampede at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra on May 9 2001 had to be honoured in place of the final league matches. more »

Signs Of Things To Come

The exciting results being recorded at the closing stages of most of the European domestic leagues plus the Champions League and many of the leagues in Africa, notably that of my country, Ghana portends an enthralling FIFA World Cup in June.I have this funny feeling that the first World Cup to be staged in Africa could provide one of the most exciting results in history. Don’t forget that Africa dubbed “the dark continent” by the colonialists is also known as the country of surprises. COURAGEOUS ARSENAL

The two courageous performances by Arsenal in the week have shown that Arsene Wenger’s twinkle twinkle little stars could still be in the reckoning for honours in both the Champions league and the Premiership.The way Arsenal could contain the incessant assaults by Barcelona and neutralised the planned ambush by Lionel Messi and Co was superb. After that stupendous display by Arsenal goalie Manuel Almunia in the first half where he saved at least three obvious goals , it came as a big surprise when two faulty anticipations in the early minutes of resumption gave Barcelona a comfortable 2-0 lead. more »

Good Show By Bayern Munich

Congratulations to Bayern Munich for that splendid 2-1 victory over Manchester United in their Champions League semi final first leg in Munich. It was a classic performance by the German club by all standards. If there was anything called super revenge, this was it. more »

Football Not A Gentleman's Game?

The sudden resignation of English FA Chief Executive Ian Watmore reminds me of a secret shared between me and former Ghana national coach Sam Arday when I was a member of the Black Stars management board in the early nineties. Arday, one day overheard some football lobbyists gossiping that I was too gentle to serve on a board reserved for football politicians and I should be replaced with someone with a tough skin. We laughed over it when he told me the story and since then we teasingly shout at each other the phrase “too gentle” whenever we meet. more »
