Intriguing Matches Galore
The massive victories recorded by Real Madrid and Schalke in the first leg quarter finals of the champions league on Tuesday night have set the stage for an intriguing semi final qualifiers.
If Tottenham could not see what was happening to them in Madrid as four goals whisked past them, defending champions Inter Milan must be in wonderland for throwing away an early lead at home and incredibly losing by five goals to two.
It would be an understatement to say that the return matches would see fireworks. It would be “war”. It would definitely be one of the greatest comebacks in Champions league history if Tottenham and Inter Milan could reach the semis.
Inter, with their splendid show against Bayern in the group qualifiers, could still have an outsider's chance of survival but Tottenham are completely out and must rather prepare to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
It looks like Inter had not fully recovered from the 3-0 thumping they received from city rivals ACMilan days before the clash against Schalke. To concede eight goals in two successive high profile matches must be most disturbing for Coach Leonardo, the Brazilian legend who was an active participant in Brazil's fifth World Cup triumph in Korea 2002.
The task facing Inter reminds me of a similar situation a top club from home country, Accra Hearts of Oak, found themselves in the Africa Cup championships in 1977. They lost 5-2 to Mufulira Wanderers of Zambia in the first leg in Lusaka and won dramatically the return 3-0 dubbed, "The Miracle of El Wak" in Ghana's football history. Can Inter cause a miracle in Germany? Your guess is as good as mine.
I get the gut feeling that the high scoring in the first batch of the quarter finals would most likely spur on Chelsea v Manchester United and Barcelona v Shaktar Donetsk to also follow suit on Wednesday and give us another basketful of goals.
Cheers everybody and keep loving sports.
