Hail The Serbian Connection
I am extremely excited that the football authorities in my home country Ghana have heeded my suggestion and gone in for a Serbian coach for the senior national football team, Black Stars. The Serbians have proved to be good partners in Ghana’s football development and it makes a lot of sense to stick to them.
To my mind the argument that Serbian coaches come to Ghana only to improve their CV and bolt does not wash. We should look at the positive side and count our blessings for the benefits we derive from these Serbians.
At this juncture I would like to welcome to Ghana Goran Stevanovic, the third Serbian to be made national coach. You could see from his body language when he was introduced to the media that he was already feeling at home.
He is definitely aware of the brilliant pace set by his two countrymen, Ratomir Dujkovic and Milovan Rajevan and having already styled himself as champion he is bound to put up a good show.
Many analysts are keen to establish the fact Ghana and Serbia seem to have many good things in common pertaining to football. They think it would be a good idea to have as many Serbian coaches as possible to visit the country and pass on some knowledge to our coaches who handle the very junior teams. This would give the youngsters the right approach to the game and help the nation build the right foundation for these young players.
I believe Ghana could even go further by signing a bilateral agreement with Serbia to assist in this regard. I am sure some of the premier division clubs would welcome such assistance. Kumasi Asante Kotoko has on their own contracted a Serbian tactician Bogdan Korak who is gradually turning things around for the then fast fading 21 times league champions.
Korak is fast polishing a number of Kotoko’s newly acquired budding stars and it may not be long when most of them will wear the national colours.
Football coaching is a serious topic both at club and national level because these tacticians hold much influence on the progress of the beautiful game. They can make or mar a game with their selection and team strategy. And that is why they are first on the firing line when things go awry. It is an extremely stressful vocation and you have to respect people like Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger for their immense staying power.
Oh how I wish chaps like Benitez and my countryman Paa Kwesi Fabin would have that kind of stamina to sustain them in their chosen profession. After that torrid time with Liverpool, one thought Inter Milan was a safe haven for Benitez but he could not last the distance. What a shame! Ditto Paa Kwasi Fabin. He seems to be always moving from frying pan into fire.
After his fine show with unheralded Heart of Lions from remote Kpando in the Volta Region of Ghana, Paa Kwasi should be mulling by now for switching to the nation’s two most glamorous clubs, Kotoko and Hearts. After his spectacular no-shows with these two best supported clubs in the country the question on the lips of soccer fans is where next Paa Kwasi?
It is a million dollar question that is as difficult to answer like whether Kenny Daglish can turn the tide for Liverpool or not and when Alex Ferguson will “retire from the ring”.
Cheers everybody and keep loving sports.
