Ghana At Melbourne 2006
Ghana entered four disciplines- athletics, boxing, table tennis and weightlifting for the Melbourne Games in Australia 2006 and returned home with two gold medals and a bronze.
Majeti Fetrie gave Ghana a surprise gold in weightlifting, long jumper Ignatius Gaisah got the second gold and heavyweight boxer Awusome Yekini won bronze.
Fetrie lifted 309kg to beat his close challenger Mohammed Abdullah from India. Ignatius Gaisah’s 8.20m leap in the long jump was enough to win him gold.
Ghana could have won a couple more medals in athletics but poor baton changing by the strong sprints quartet of Leo Myles Mills, Eric Nkansah, Seth Amoo and Aziz Zakari robbed Ghana of any further honours.
Incidentally, the women’s relay team of Gifty Addy, Elizabeth Ampofo, Mariama Salifu and Vida Anim also messed up in the sprints finals after recording the fourth fastest time of 39.03secs in the semis after Jamaica, Australia and Canada.
Apart from Awusome Yekini, all the remaining boxers failed to reach the medal zone.
They were light-flyweight Manyo Plange; bantamweight Prince Octopus Dzanie; lightweight Samir Bastir; welterweight Samir Issah, light welterweight Albert Neequaye and middleweight Ahmed Sasraku.
Some notable times recorded by three Ghanaian athletes were Aziz Zakari 10.36secs in the 100m heats; Seth Amoo 21.04 secs in the 200m and Gifty Addy 24.18 secs.
Ghana is currently in India taking part in her 13th Commonwealth Games since her debut in 1954.I hope you have enjoyed the recount of the history of Ghana’s participation in the Commonwealth Games.
Cheers everyone and keep loving sports.
