The Premier soccer league of Ghana is resuming this weekend after a short disruption by a Jehovah Witness International convention that took over three major sports stadiums in Accra, Kumasi and Sekondi. Football fans were not particularly enthused that a religious sect perceived to have no respect for state authority of the national flag should be allowed the use of sate property and in the process disrupting a national programme. more »

This Can't Be A Fitting Climax

I still hold the view that the Ghana Premier League Board missed a fine opportunity last Sunday to stage a fitting coronation for the 2008-2009 marathon league. The planned ceremonial match this weekend between champions Accra Hearts of Oak and former city rivals Accra Great Olympics is to my mind a poor fixture to climax such an exciting league season. more »

Ghana's Premier League To The Wire

This is definitely not the first time the premier league, the passion of the nation, is going to the wire with the two most famous clubs in the country, Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak chasing the Golden Fleece in a neck to neck affair. With only three more games to end the season, only two points separate Hearts and Asante Kotoko from the top of the table. The amazing thing is the sudden turn around of fortunes in the second round of the proceedings when the first round pointed to a straight forward win for Accra Hearts of Oak. more »

Are Ghanaian Football Clubs Ripe To Be Sold?

A hint on radio by Accra Hearts of Oak’s vice chairman Frank Nelson that an Indian business tycoon has plans to buy the club has generated a lot of discussions in football circles around the country. The main topic for discussion is whether Ghanaian football clubs especially the so called big traditional ones have the required structures that make them fit to be sold. Indeed, the million cedi question is who owns these traditional clubs that may give them the rights to put up the clubs for sale. more »
