May 6th 1993: Overjoyed Manchester United fans staged a huge victory celebration at Old Trafford and the team responded with a 3-1 victory over Blackburn.
United won when Aston Villa went down 1-0 to Oldham. Some of the loudest cheers were reserved for the heroes of the last triumph in 1967 as former manager Sir Matt Busby and club greats Bobby Charlton and Dennis Law arrived at the ground.
May 5th 1994: South Africa is expected to take part in the Commonwealth Games in August for the first time in 36 years. “Should they decide to come, they will be more than welcome”, said David Roach, a spokesman for the organizers.
May 6th 1994: Zambia Football Association has struck a deal with John Fashanu’s company “Blue Orchid” to assist local players to be signed up by overseas clubs under favourable terms.
May 7th 1994: Ghana’s Azuma Nelson beaten on points by James Leija in their WBC super featherweight title fight in Las Vegas. Scores were 117-109; 117-110; 114-113 in favour of Leija. After the fight rind doctors said Azuma broke his hand in the 4th round.
May 4th 1995: Bayern Munich has been punished by the German football Association for fielding too many amateur players in a match against Frankfurt. Bayern won 5-2 but the FA reversed the scores.
May 5th 1996: Former Wimbledon champion Boric Becker has reassured fans he was not about to drop out of tennis and said he hoped to play for another two or three years
May 7th 1996: The cost of constructing facilities for the Sydney 2000 Olympics has ballooned to 3.2 billion dollars since the city first bid for the Games in 1992
May 5th 1998: Arsenal win English league for the 11th time and first since 1971
May 5th 1998: Steffi Graf pulls out of French Open and faces injury worries might force her to bring her prolific career to an end.
May 6th 1999: Liverpool stretch Manchester United to a 2-2 draw in a crucial league match at Anfield. United led 2-0 at one stage but conceded penalty and defender sent off. Then under pressure Paul Ince scored own goal in goalmouth melee.
May 7th 2002: Arsenal win English league defeating Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford. Goal scorer was Wiltford.
Arsenal becomes the first club in more than a hundred years since Preston North End way back in 188-89 not to lose an away game all season in top flight football. Arsenal maintained record of scoring in every league match this season.
