May 1st 1993: Zambia, gripped by grief following the death of the national soccer team players in air crash has announced her withdrawal from both the 1994 African Cup and World Cup.
FIFA had earlier announced that it would not pressurize the Zambian Football Association into deciding whether Zambia should participate in the World Cup series or not and that it would give Zambia enough time to decide
May 4th 1993: Half of the 1994 World Cup tickets available to fans in the United States have already been sold and the rest will go on sale soon.
May 3 1994: Two Argentina soccer fans were killed in a shootout with fans of a rival club who were irate at losing a match.
May 3rd 1994: The organizers of Cape Town’s bid to host the 2004 Olympics said their position had been boosted by the success of South Africa’s first all race elections.
May 1st 1995: Obuasi Goldfields win Ghana’s Premier League with two more matches to go. Their 9th week match against Dawu Youngsters at Dawu was full of tension. Trouble started brewing when supporters of Dawu refused to allow players of Goldfields to drive onto the arena in retaliation to a similar incident at Obuasi claiming that Goldfields also refused them entry at Obuasi in the first round.
May 1st 1997: FIFA General Secretary Sepp Blatter says key World Cup matches such as the final would be on free television. The opening game, one semi-final and the final will be shown on free television.
May 3rd 1997: Prince Naseem Hamed fulfilled his pre-bout promises when he defeated challenger Billy Hardy inside the first round of a WBO and IBF featherweight fight in Manchester.
May 4th 1997: Chelsea’s Italian striker Gianfranco Zola has been named England’s footballer of the year; the third successive overseas player to win the award.
May 2nd 1998: Justin Fashanu, one of the most gifted footballers to grace English football reported dead in London. He was 36.
May 3rd 1999: English Premier League is discussing plans aimed at protecting officials from unruly fans by giving them safe cars.
May 2nd 2002: Herbert Mensah says he will quit Kumasi Asante Kotoko as Chief Executive at the end of the season. He told reporters he will soon be writing to the Asantehene on his decision.
May 22nd 2002: Accra Hearts of Oak to earn 35 billion Cedis over two years in apparel and memorabilia deal with Ghana Textile Co. Ltd and Vlisco International. Items include designer executive shirts, mufti, hats, sun visor caps and scarfs.
