Exciting Days Ahead
I cannot simply help to resist the temptation of continuing to admire the great similarities in English football programmes and that of my home country, Ghana.
Even though I am not too excited about certain Ghanaian premier division clubs adopting typical English names like Chelsea and Arsenal, I would have to admit that they are really taking a lot of inspiration from those names and now Berekum Chelsea and Berekum Arsenal can easily be counted among the top clubs in Ghana.
Berekum Chelsea for instance has established an almost unassailable 10 points lead on the premiership table after four matches in the second round. And Arsenal are 7th on the 16 club table.
Chelsea have the cream of the home based Black Stars, the national team currently in Sudan for the upcoming African Nations Championships and this depicts their array of talents.
Last weekend when Manchester United and Arsenal were bulldozing their way through round five of the English FA Cup, the premier home boys in Ghana were also tearing apart their less endowed opponents in the lower division in the FA Cup preliminaries.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Berekum Arsenal, Tarkwa Medeama, Kpandu Heart of Lions, and Wa All Stars all showed their class. The competition is yet to see any surprise package like we have in England where the defending champions Chelsea had to struggle to earn a replay against Everton.
While Ghana is still waiting to witness a shocker like Fulham's 4-0 whipping of Tottenham, elections watchers are sounding a note of warning to Ghana Football Association Chief Kwesi Nyantekyi, an aspiring CAF executive member not to be too sure of success at the upcoming CAF polls in Sudan.
Recently Nyantekyi hosted a large number African FA heads to witness a FIFA Goal 11 project at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram in Greater Accra region.
Even though most of them gave every indication they would vote for Kwesi, recent happenings during the voting for FIFA World Cup host 2018&2022 have put some people on edge.
David Beckam & co who spearheaded England's bid for 2018 will tell you that you cannot be sure until the votes are counted.
There is no doubt that the Ghana FA chief has impeccable credentials having led Ghana to two successive World Cups and a World Cup triumph at the junior level in 2009, courtesy Dede Ayew's Under -20 Black Satellites.
On the local scene, a lot of progress has been made to promote the game. The domestic league is receiving extensive patronage and you could see a lot of talents emerging with everybody clamourng to wear the national colours.
It is my wish that Kwesi gets the nod as CAF executive member that would make the late Sam Okyere of Ghana smile in his grave that at long last another Ghanaian has gained CAF executive status sine he left the scene more than two decades ago.
Sam Okyere would also be happy to learn that the club he helped to build, Obuasi Ashgold is still making the waves. They missed the league title by a whisker last season but have made a strong case in the ongoing CAF Confederation Cup by scoring a brilliant 1-0 away win over Sewe Sport of Ivory Coast.
Reports say the match was played in an empty stadium. Of course what do you expect with all the political tension in the country? Only a few die hards would risk going to the stadium. But don't be perturbed.
The Abidjan math would definitely be a sharp contrast with the upcoming Manchester United- Crawley Town FA Cup fixture at Old Trafford where the lower division club says they deem it an honour to play at the Theatre of Dreams.
Expect Crawley fans to filled Old Trafford to capacity and this would show the true face of football -the crazy game.
Cheers everybody and keep loving sports.
