Azumah Declared Fit To Fight
Ghana’s boxing legend Azumah Nelson former long reigning world featherweight champion has been declared medically fit to fight again after ten years retirement.
Dr Awudu Nelson younger brother of the boxer and manager told the media in Accra "physical conditioning is my area of speciality and I can tell you that Azumah has transformed from rustiness to full fitness". Azumah also confirmed the Doctor’s verdict and disclosed that even though his timing was slow and reflexes not too sharp he was in good shape to deliver the goods.
Azumah told reporters he would fly from Accra to Australia on Saturday June 14th to face Jeff Fenech in a special challenge bout in Melbourne on June 24th. It will be the third fight between the two tough punchers. The first one in 1991 in Las Vegas ended in a draw but Azumah won the return in 1992 by an 8th round knock out in front of Fenech’s home fans in Australia.
Fenech 49, has a record of 28 wins, three defeats, one draw with 21 knock-outs. Azumah 50 has 39 wins, five defeats and two draws with 21 knock-outs.
According to Azumah he has decided to put on his boxing gloves again to prove that he still has the boxing skills and secondly to gather funds for the Azumah Nelson Foundation he has established that caters for the needy.
It is the prayer of many boxing fans in Ghana that Azumah would realize his ambition and that the programme would become a success.
