Another Soccer Bonanza in Ghana
Whilst English football fans await the three sizzling fixtures between the two amazing prize fighters, Manchester United and Chelsea, their counterparts in Ghana will enjoy a bumper harvest of two exciting international matches this weekend.
The Ghana Olympic team, Black Meteors, will face Sudan in an Olympic Games qualifier in the first match followed by an African Nations Cup qualifier between Benin and Cote d’Ivoire. Both matches take place at the Ohene Djan Stadium at the nation's capital .What a treat!
The Black Meteors determination to restore Ghana's Olympic football image after the poor show at the 2004 Athens Olympics has gingered them to put up a terrific fight. Led by outspoken coach David Duncan formerly of premier club Ashgold, the Meteors are taking no chances since Sudan are gradually proving to be an emerging force in African football.
Recently ,Sudan's senior national team displayed abundant skills to hold the Black Stars of Ghana to a pulsating goalless draw in an African Nations qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
The Sudanese cannot be underrated but Ghana can boast of a strong squad with a lot of key players who have successfully graduated from the victorious Under 20 Black Satellites team that shook the world stage in 2009.
Midfield star Gladson Awako, goalkeepers Joe Addo and Daniel Adjei plus a trenchant attacking force of Samuel Affum, Larbi Coomson, Bismark Aidan and Kabiru Imoro are capable of delivering the goods. An exciting match is therefore anticipated.
The second match between Cote d’ Ivoire and Benin is being played in Ghana by default. It should have taken place in Cote d'Ivoire but political tension in that country has made the country unsafe for football. What a shame.
Lovers of sports would be happy if the politicians would please leave us alone to enjoy our football.
Sadly, media reports say the events that led to the current unfortunate stalemate in Cote d'Ivoire are simmering in Benin. It is my fervent prayer that things would not generate into any loss of lives and make football and for that matter sports in general suffer.
Even though Ghanaian football lovers would throng the Ohene Djan Stadium to see the great football names in action it is the sincere hope of Ghanaians that peace would return to our neighbouring countries so the citizens can also enjoy their sports and leisure.
It is an exciting privilege to see all the football stars we see on television screens in person.Cote d'Ivoire have a lot of them; Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou of Chelsea; Christian Koffi Ndri of Sevilla; Arsenal's Emmanuel Eboue and Qatar based Abdel-Kader Keita. They constitute the cream of the Elephants.
Seeing them in action for 90 minutes will let you forget your problems even if temporarily. On paper, The Elephants should be too strong for The Squirrels of Benin but it must be said that since their debut in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004, Benin have managed to be counted among the greats in Africa.
In the last Nations Cup for instance they beat Sudan to qualify in their group alongside Ghana and Mali.
Led by Nigerian born Razak Omotoyossi of French side FC Mettz , Benin can give Drogba and Co a tough time and fans who will manage to be at the stadium will have their money's worth as they listen to radio commentary from Congo where the Black Stars will be playing Congo in the Cup of Nations qualifier.
What a weekend of football fiesta.
Cheers everybody and keep loving sports
As I was about to finish this write up I had confirmation that Kumasi Asante Kotoko will meet former Premier Club Gomoa Feyenoord in a friendly match at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi this weekend.
A good one there for football lovers in Kumasi- the Ashanti capital affectionately called The Garden City of West Africa.
