A Tale Of Two Coaches / Managers
Two famous football coaches have come into my focus this week:- Arsene Wenger of English club Arsenal and Isaac Opeele Boateng of Kumasi Asante Kotoko (Ghana).
Arsene Wenger is making headline news this week because he has finally admitted that his trusted youth policy has failed to win trophies and that he would look to bring in experienced players. Hurray!
Wenger has stoutly defended his so called youth policy for the past four seasons without success but he continued to be hopeful until the day Manchester United completely whitewashed his youngsters in the second leg semi final of the Champions’ league at the Emirates Stadium. Following serious promptings from the crest fallen supporters including shareholder Alisher Usmanov, the manager has now seen reality and there are credible reports that he would sign big next season, for instance bringing Yaya Toure of Barcelona to join his brother Kolo.
Congratulations to Arsene Wenger for seeing the light after groping in the dark for a long time. One would describe this as a humble acknowledgement of a true situation. The French man is the English league’s second longest serving manager with 12 years after Alex Ferguson on 23 who is an expert in youth policy with a productive system of blending the youth with the experienced players. From Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes to Ronaldo and Rooney, they all started young and had to play alongside the tough guys till they cut their teeth.
Currently teenagers like Welbeck, Johhny Evans, Nani, Rafael, Manucho, Anderson, Macheda and others are bidding their time to be regulars in future. This is Ferguson’s recipe for effective team building, no wonder he is gunning for a league hat-trick and Champions league double on the trot.
How I wish Kumasi Asante Kotoko coach Opeele Boateng would be humble enough to pick the alphabets of supreme coaching from the types of Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger and refrain from his high sounding theories in the newspapers.
The young man is hitting headlines this week for his decision to step down as head coach and opting to be the assistant to whoever would be appointed head. This is a strange decision and not surprisingly the interpretations are varied .The coach believes there are some unseen hands thwarting his efforts to build a strong Kotoko team and the surprise is why he should not quit outright but opt to hide behind a head coach “and give him all the support”.
The general impression is that the coach has found the job too tough for him and he would be advised to resign honourably to save the fabulous club of Africa from a possible relegation from the premiership. Kotoko have a tough mid week encounter against Berekum Arsenal and it is left to be seen whether coach Boateng will be at the match in his capacity as head coach or assistant. Some people are definitely toying with the reputation of a great club like Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
Just as I was about to finish this article, a keen admirer of Kotoko,Dr. Kofi Effah sent me a text message thus “If we are not careful, Coach Opeele Boateng will launch operation three points for the final match in the league to redeem Kotoko from relegation and put in his CV- Kotoko’s Saviour”. Ladies and gentlemen this is food for thought.
Truly the sporting scene is full of excitement. Cheers everybody and keep loving sports. .
