May 16th 1993: Sevilla were inspired by the return of Diego Maradona in the Spanish league in Madrid beating Real Sociedad 3-1 and keeping alive their chances of a place in Europe next season.
Maradona, sidelined by a mixture of suspensions and injuries since April 4 set up the first two Sevilla goals before being substituted in the second half.
May 18th 1993: Abedi Pele says he won’t play for Ghana again. “I’ve quit international matches” he told press conference in Munich where Marseille are to play A.C.Milan in the European Cup. He says he might leave Marseille for another club at the close of the season.
May 19th 1994: A federal appeals court has reversed the decision awarding 27 million dollars to 400 metre world record holder Butch Reynolds, saying the lower court that granted the award against the IAAF did not have proper jurisdiction.
May 17th 1995:Paris St Germain’s Liberian striker George Weah has agreed a move to A.C.Milan for a sum believed to be 8 million dollars.
May 18th 1996: Atlanta Olympic Stadium opens with fanfare in the baking heat that organizers fervently wish will go away before the Games.
May 19th 1997: Brazilian soccer fans have applied for 120,000 tickets for the opening match of the World Cup finals next year even though they don’t yet know who their team will be playing. In any case, the venue for the match- the new Stade de France will have a capacity of only 80,000 and with many of those tickets going to French fans; many Brazilian fans are likely to go in for a major disappointment.
