May 10th 1993: Ghana and 13 other African countries are to benefit from the Stuttgart Sponsoring Programme, a project designed to help develop athletics in Africa.
May 7th 1994:Bayern Munich clinched their 13th German first division soccer title when they beat Schalke 2-0 at home. Tony Yeboah of Frankfurt and Stefan Kurtz of Kaiserslautern scored 18 goals apiece to tie for the top scorers honour.
May 8th 1994: Bryan Robson bowed out after 13 years at Manchester United. He played his 534th game of an illustrious career.
He said “I wish I could lose 10 years to be part of this emerging United. It’s the best side I’ve seen in my long and happy association with the club”.
May 10th 1995: Arsenal fails in their bid to become the first team to retain the European Cup Winners Cup when they lost 2-1 to Zaragoza in the final. A last minute goal by Nayim stunned Arsenal.
May 10th 1995: Two sparkling goals by Ghanaian Anthony Yeboah helped Leeds United beat Crystal Palace 3-1 to send the Londoners to relegation.
May 12th 1996: Manchester United win FA Cup beating Liverpool 1-0 thanks to an 85th minute goal by Eric Cantona.
May 8th 1997: Manchester United were crowned English Premier league champions for the fourth time in five years as their two main rivals failed to extend the title race to the final weekend of the season.
Liverpool lost 1-2 to Wimbledon and Newcastle drew 0-0 at West Ham to ensure that United retained the title without kicking a ball confirming their position as English soccer’s team of the nineties.
May 10th 1998: Kanu has revealed that he wants to join Arsenal. The London Club has made a five million pounds bid for the Nigerian World Cup captain.
May 9th 1999:Chelsea’s slim English Premier League title hopes finally disappeared when they could only draw 2-2 with London rivals Spurs.
May 10th 1999: South Africa hails Nigeria’s withdrawal from hosting the World Cup.
May 9th 2000: Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 2-1 in second leg semi- final of the European champions’ league but Real qualify on aggregate winning the first leg 2-0.
May 9th 2000: Disaster at Accra Sports Stadium as 126 football fans killed in a stampede after a league match between Accra Hearts of Oak. Police reported to have thrown teargas into the stands as fans rioted after the match destroying chairs. Worst sports disaster in Africa.
May 11th 2002: 13 years after squandering a championship point Andre Agassi beat Tommy Haas 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 win Italian Open.
The victory, the first for an American man in Rome since Pete Sampras won in 1994 ends Agassi’s long streak of misfortunes in the event.
